Back to Ducks

Exploding from the marsh, the colorful pair of wood ducks contrasts brightly against the clear blue sky, as they leap nervously skyward.  Without a doubt, the North American Wood Duck (Aix sponsa) is considered the most colorful and beautifully marked of all waterfowl found on the North American continent.  Nearly extinct in the early 1900’s due to overshooting and most importantly with the destruction of potential nesting sites due to widespread tree felling during World War I, plummeted the population of these magnificent birds to near disastrous levels.  Starting with a closed season in both the United States and Canada from 1918 to 1941 and a tremendous effort by the United States Government, state governments, conservationist, open minded sportsmen and wildlife organizations alike to aid the wood duck by concentrating their efforts on the construction of tens of thousands of nesting boxes was an important factor in stopping the decline of the wood duck population.  Through these efforts, past and present, this magnificent bird will henceforth be around in safe numbers for all to enjoy.   “These birds in flight or resting are as pretty and colorful as it gets.  The challenge to capture their color and movement is always an exciting one.  To see them coming in to land or taking off is always a thrill and pleasure.  I pray that they will always be around to flash their wings of color that has so excited and moved all of us who have witnessed these wonderful birds of grace and beauty.”
